LUCUA SOUTH Osaka: What’s Inside, Which Floors, and Is It Worth It (2026)

LUCUA SOUTH is the third building of the LUCUA Osaka complex at JR Osaka Station, opened April 5, 2026.

It occupies floors 10 to 16 of the South Gate Building and runs on two tracks: a character merchandise zone called LUCUA Characters World on floors 10 to 13, and a 28-restaurant dining zone called LUCUA SOUTH DINING on floors 14 to 16.

What Is LUCUA SOUTH?

LUCUA Osaka has been a two-building complex since 2011: LUCUA and LUCUA 1100 sit side by side in the North Gate Building of JR Osaka Station.

LUCUA SOUTH is different.

It’s in the South Gate Building — the building on the opposite side of the station tracks — and it’s a separate facility with a separate entrance, a separate floor plan, and a completely different purpose.

Where LUCUA and LUCUA 1100 are fashion-forward shopping destinations, LUCUA SOUTH is built around pop culture and dining.

The upper floors of the South Gate Building have been through a large-scale renovation in collaboration between JR-West and Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores, and the result is what you see now: one of the most ambitious character merchandise builds in western Japan, plus a dining floor stack that consolidates what was previously scattered across Daimaru Umeda and the old Ichiroku Gourmet operation on the 16th floor.

This distinction matters more than it might seem.

If you get off the train at JR Osaka Station and walk toward the wrong building, you will not find Nintendo Osaka.

The two complexes are connected through walkways inside the station, but they are not the same building.

Floor-by-Floor Guide to LUCUA SOUTH

The full 7-floor layout splits cleanly: floors 10 to 13 are retail, floors 14 to 16 are food.

Floors 10-13: LUCUA Characters World

LUCUA Characters World is the headline attraction. The plan — fully realized by 2027 — is 40 or more character-focused stores across four floors, making it one of the largest dedicated character merchandise zones in Japan.

What’s actually open right now in Phase 1 is considerably more modest: five stores that have relocated or continued from the Daimaru Umeda building, anchored by three of the biggest names in Japanese pop culture retail.

• Nintendo Osaka is on the 13th floor. This is the official Nintendo store — Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing, the whole catalogue. The atmosphere and exclusive merchandise selection here are meaningfully different from what you get in a department store corner. If you’ve visited the Nintendo Tokyo store in Shibuya, the format will be familiar.
• Pokemon Center Osaka is also on the 13th floor. This is the relocated version from its former home in Daimaru Umeda, now in a purpose-built space. If your party includes anyone aged 8 to 35 with any attachment to Pokemon whatsoever, budget extra time here.
• ONE PIECE Mugiwara Store completes the anchor trio on floor 13. Official Toei Animation merchandise, comprehensive range, and the kind of dedicated floor space that standalone Mugiwara Stores command rather than a department store concession.

The remaining two Phase 1 stores are continuing tenants from the Daimaru Umeda building. By autumn 2026, Phase 2 adds 29 more stores to LUCUA Characters World — including confirmed arrivals Sanrio, Square Enix Official Goods Shop, Everything Minecraft, and Narumiya Happy Park, among others. The full picture with 40-plus stores is a 2027 reality.

Be honest with yourself about this: Phase 1 is five stores. It’s a strong five, but it’s five. The full vision is not yet here.

How to Get to LUCUA SOUTH

LUCUA SOUTH is in the South Gate Building.

This is a critical navigation point that every existing English guide either buries or ignores.

From JR Osaka Station

Use the Central Exit.

The South Gate Building is directly accessible from there in approximately one minute on foot.

Follow signage for the South Gate Building — it’s not on the same side as LUCUA and LUCUA 1100.

From Hankyu and Osaka Metro Umeda Stations

Both stations connect into the wider Osaka Station City complex.

The walking route to the South Gate Building takes approximately five minutes.

Follow underground walkway signage toward JR Osaka Station and then to the South Gate Building.

LUCUA SOUTH vs. LUCUA 1100: Don’t Get the Buildings Mixed Up

This is genuinely confusing because the branding overlaps and maps don’t always make the separation obvious.

The short version:

• LUCUA SOUTH = South Gate Building, floors 10-16, character zone + dining
• LUCUA and LUCUA 1100 = North Gate Building, fashion and general retail

They are connected through the station complex via walkways, but they have different main entrances.

If you’re specifically going to Nintendo Osaka or Pokemon Center Osaka, enter from the Central Exit side and look for South Gate Building signage from the start.

Don’t assume you’ll just naturally find it once you’re inside — the complex is large enough that wandering costs time.

How Long to Spend at LUCUA SOUTH

This depends almost entirely on why you’re going.

If Nintendo Osaka and Pokemon Center Osaka are your main objectives, plan for two to three hours minimum.

Both stores have large floor areas, extensive product ranges, and on weekends, meaningful queue times for certain sections.

If you add the ONE PIECE store and browse all five Phase 1 character stores properly, three hours is not excessive.

A casual visitor with general curiosity but no particular attachment to any of the character brands can comfortably cover the Phase 1 character zone in an hour to an hour and a half.

There isn’t enough to hold you longer than that if the merchandise itself isn’t your focus.

For dining only, budget one to two hours depending on whether there’s a wait for your restaurant of choice.

Weekend evenings on floors 14 to 16 will have queues at the more popular spots.

If you’re combining character stores and a meal: three to four hours for a thorough visit.

One honest caveat: until Phase 2 lands in autumn 2026, the character zone is thin by the standards of what it will eventually become.

Going before then means you’re visiting an incomplete product.

That’s fine if the three anchor stores are your reason for going.

It’s less compelling if you were hoping for the full 40-store vision.

Practical Tips for Visiting LUCUA SOUTH

Go on a weekday morning if you’re targeting the character stores. Nintendo Osaka and Pokemon Center Osaka draw fans who have specifically planned Osaka trips around visiting them — which means weekends get crowded in ways that feel different from general mall traffic.

A Tuesday or Wednesday morning gives you the stores to yourself.

Phase 1 reality check. If you’re visiting before autumn 2026, the character zone has five stores open.

They’re good stores, but if someone told you LUCUA Characters World is “one of Japan’s largest character zones,” that refers to the 2027 completed version, not what exists right now.

Manage expectations accordingly and you won’t be disappointed.

Be surprised positively if you want to spin it that way.

For dining, some restaurants on floors 14 and 15 accept reservations and it’s worth checking before you go on a weekend or holiday.

The family dining push on floor 15 means school holidays and public holidays will be busier than average.

Coin lockers are available throughout JR Osaka Station and inside the Osaka Station City complex.

If you’re buying merchandise at the character stores and continuing elsewhere in Osaka, use them.

Shopping bags get heavy fast, and Osaka has a lot more walking ahead.

Payment: Credit cards are accepted at Nintendo Osaka and Pokemon Center Osaka, as they are at most major retail operations in the complex.

IC cards (Suica, ICOCA) work for transit but aren’t always accepted at retail registers, so keep some cash as backup for smaller purchases.

Is LUCUA SOUTH Worth Visiting?

The honest answer splits by audience.

1. For anime and gaming fans: Yes, go. Nintendo Osaka and Pokemon Center Osaka are dedicated stores with inventory depth, atmosphere, and exclusive merchandise that no department store corner can match. Even if you’ve visited the Daimaru versions of these stores in the past, the LUCUA SOUTH iterations are purpose-built for this role in a way the department store context wasn’t. If pop culture merchandise is part of how you experience travel in Japan, LUCUA SOUTH belongs on your Osaka list.
2. For general tourists: It depends on how much of your Osaka time you want to spend in a mall. LUCUA SOUTH doesn’t justify a dedicated half-day excursion if you have no connection to any of the character brands. But if you’re already in Umeda — which you probably will be, given that Umeda Sky Building, Grand Front Osaka, and Shin-Osaka connections all pull people into this area — then a 1.5-hour stop at LUCUA SOUTH makes straightforward sense. The dining floors alone are a practical reason to be there for lunch or dinner.
3. Phase 1 caveat, one more time: If you visit before autumn 2026, you’re seeing an opening act, not the full show. Nintendo, Pokemon, and ONE PIECE are headliners — but the supporting cast isn’t here yet. Whether that’s enough depends on whether those three names are the draw.
