Osaka is first and foremost a Japanese food city, and anyone visiting primarily for the cuisine should lean into that. But extended stays, dietary preferences, or simply the desire for something different make international options worth knowing about.
The international restaurant scene is concentrated in Umeda and Horie, the latter being Osaka’s most cosmopolitan neighborhood and the most reliable place to find quality non-Japanese cooking. Indian, Italian, Middle Eastern, and Southeast Asian options all appear here at a standard well above the tourist-district average.
What’s Worth Seeking Out
Indian food is arguably the strongest non-Japanese cuisine in Osaka, with several spots serving regional subcontinental cooking rather than generic curry-house menus. Italian ranges from decent pasta joints to serious wood-fired pizza. Middle Eastern options, while fewer, include some genuinely good falafel and mezze in the Namba area.
Managing Expectations
Osaka’s international food scene is good for a Japanese city but it is still a Japanese city. Portion sizes, spice levels, and ingredient availability all differ from what you’d find in London, Sydney, or New York. Treat it on its own terms and you’ll find plenty that’s worth eating.
