Osaka has one of Japan’s largest Zainichi Korean communities, concentrated historically in the Tsuruhashi area — often called Japan’s largest Koreatown. This isn’t a manufactured tourist district; it’s a functioning community with decades of food culture behind it. The Korean food in Osaka, as a result, tends to be more authentic and more varied than what you’ll find in cities without that demographic foundation.
Tsuruhashi’s covered market and surrounding streets are the obvious starting point, but strong Korean restaurants exist across Namba and the areas south of the city centre. The range covers everything from hole-in-the-wall grilled meat counters to full-service restaurants running proper Korean course menus.
What Korean Foods to Order in Osaka
Korean yakiniku — grilled beef and offal over charcoal — is the headline act, and Osaka does it better than almost anywhere outside Korea itself. Beyond that, look for sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew), jeon (Korean savoury pancakes), and cold naengmyeon noodles in summer. Korean fried chicken has also established a strong presence in recent years.
Tsuruhashi vs. the Rest of the City
Tsuruhashi is worth visiting specifically for the market atmosphere and the density of options, but the best individual restaurants are not necessarily concentrated there. Some of Osaka’s strongest Korean cooking happens in quieter spots away from the tourist foot traffic. Both are worth exploring.
