Station coin lockers in Osaka start at ¥400, but suitcase-sized ones are scarce and fill early. For a big bag, use a staffed counter such as Crosta at ¥1,000 a day, leave it at your hotel, or send it ahead with Yamato same-day delivery from ¥1,240. At Kansai Airport, lockers cost ¥400 to ¥800 a day.

Luggage storage in Osaka is easy for a daypack and harder for a big suitcase.

Station coin lockers start at ¥400, but large ones run out first.

For anything big, a staffed counter at ¥800 to ¥1,000 a day or same-day hotel delivery is the safer plan.

You get four real options in this Explore Osaka guide: coin lockers, staffed counters, your hotel’s front desk, and delivery.

It goes station by station through Shin-Osaka, Osaka Station, and Namba, then Kansai Airport.

The short version is simple. Use a locker for a small bag and a few hours.

Use a counter or delivery for a suitcase or a full day. Ask your hotel first, because it may cost nothing.

Lockers in very busy stations fill quickly, so plan a backup before you arrive with a suitcase.

You can store luggage in Osaka in station coin lockers, at staffed counters in the main stations, or at your hotel.

Delivery services also take bags to your next hotel the same day.

Each option suits a different bag and a different day.

This table sums up what each one costs and where it fails.

Option Typical cost Best for Weak spot
Station coin locker ¥400 to ¥1,500 per use Small bags, a few hours Large units fill early
Staffed counter ¥800 to ¥1,000 per bag per day Suitcases, long days Fixed opening hours

Same-day delivery ¥1,240 to ¥4,140 per bag Moving between hotels Morning drop-off cutoffs

The Japan National Tourism Organization warns on its luggage storage page that lockers in very busy locations fill up quickly.

In Osaka, that means the big stations on a weekend morning.

Plan a backup before you arrive with a suitcase.

Coin Lockers at the Big Stations

A bank of station coin lockers in small, medium and large sizes in a corridor of an Osaka railway station
At Kintetsu Osaka-Namba, only one of 219 lockers is extra large enough for a tall suitcase.

Coin lockers sit in all the major Osaka stations, and each rail company runs its own.

Small boxes are plentiful. Suitcase-sized ones are scarce, so the size of your bag decides whether a locker works.

How Station Lockers Work

Most lockers fit one of three systems. Older ones take coins only.

Newer ones take an IC card such as ICOCA, and some take QR codes or credit cards.

App-based lockers take no cash at all.

Kintetsu, for example, says its standard lockers need coins, and not every locker area has a change machine.

Carry a few ¥100 coins, or use a locker that takes your IC card.

Our guide to how ICOCA compares with passes covers topping up.

Prices depend on size. Kintetsu’s locker list for Osaka-Namba shows the typical spread:

Size at Kintetsu Osaka-Namba Number of units Price
Small 82 ¥400 to ¥600
Medium 18 ¥400 to ¥700
Large 118 ¥600 to ¥1,000
Extra large 1 ¥800 to ¥1,500

Look at the extra large row.

The whole station has one locker built for a tall suitcase, with an inside height of up to 1,135 mm.

A large unit tops out at 868 mm, which fits a cabin bag and most medium cases but not every large suitcase.

Shin-Osaka Station

Shin-Osaka is the Shinkansen station, and it puts every kind of luggage option in one place.

You get coin lockers, an app-based locker bank, and a staffed counter by the main exit.

The app-based lockers belong to SPACER.

Its Shin-Osaka location stands on the first floor in front of the airport bus stop, below the stairs from the south ticket gate.

It opens from 05:00 to 23:59.

SPACER is cashless and runs through its app.

Its user FAQ sets a maximum of 96 hours.

After that, staff remove the bag.

You pay four days of fees plus a ¥5,000 handling fee, and the bag comes back to you cash on delivery.

Osaka Station and Umeda

JR Osaka Station has coin lockers on its first and third floors.

The Metro, Hankyu, and Hanshin stops next door are called Umeda, and each runs its own lockers.

Our guide to the Umeda district explains how the stations fit together.

Osaka Station has a tool that saves a lot of walking.

JR West put locker search kiosks in three places inside the station in December 2016.

They show where the lockers are, which ones take ICOCA, and how many of each size are free right now.

The same ICOCA Locker Search works on your phone.

For longer stays, Osaka Station City lists the Jibuun Locker in the passage south of LUCUA on the third floor.

It runs as a flat 30-day plan and takes credit cards only.

Hankyu is adding and upgrading lockers at Osaka-umeda Station.

According to Hankyu’s own report, the new ones take QR codes and credit cards, so you need no coins to use them.

Namba

Namba has hundreds of lockers, and it also has heavy demand.

The Nankai, Osaka Metro, Kintetsu, and JR stations all use the name, and each has its own lockers.

Our page on the Namba district shows how the stations connect.

Nankai Namba alone has more than 700 lockers in 11 spots, based on the Osaka Convention and Tourism Bureau’s Namba page.

Only eight of them are extra large.

Six sit by the north exit and two beside the Japan Post Bank ATM at the central ticket gate.

Osaka Metro added 140 lockers outside the south-south gate of its Midosuji Line Namba Station in July 2024.

Another 34 went in outside the north gate of the Yotsubashi Line station.

The Metro’s announcement covered 227 new lockers across five stations.

Smart Lockers on Osaka Metro

Osaka Metro also runs smart lockers you can book ahead.

They opened in April 2025 at Honmachi, by the Chuo Line east gate, and at Nippombashi, by the Sennichimae Line east gate.

The first hour is free.

Prices in the Metro’s smart locker notice run like this:

Size First 3 hours 24-hour cap
Small ¥300 ¥900
Medium ¥400 ¥1,200
Large ¥600 ¥1,800

The large size is 807.6 mm tall, enough for a medium suitcase.

These lockers also send bags to 153 partner hotels in Osaka the same day, if you drop them off by 14:00.

Delivery costs ¥1,900, ¥2,300, or ¥2,800 by size.

For the lines themselves, see our guide to Osaka Metro lines and fares.

Staffed Counters That Take Any Suitcase

Tagged suitcases stored on metal shelves behind a staffed baggage counter in an Osaka station
A staffed counter takes bags too big for any locker, with no hunting for a free unit.

A staffed counter is the answer for a big bag.

Staff take anything up to the size limit, give you a tag, and keep it until closing time or for weeks.

You never hunt for a free locker.

Crosta at Shin-Osaka and Osaka Station

Crosta is JR West’s own baggage counter brand, run by JR West Marunix.

Both Osaka branches charge ¥1,000 per item per day and keep bags for up to 30 days.

Each item must be under 2 metres long and 30 kg.

Crosta Shin-Osaka sits on the first floor by the main exit, outside the ticket gates.

It opens from 09:00 to 23:00, every day of the year.

That late closing makes it the best choice for an evening Shinkansen.

Crosta Osaka is on the first floor of JR Osaka Station, next to the Nippon Travel Agency office by the Central Gate.

Its own page lists hours of 09:00 to 20:00, while Osaka Station City gives an 08:00 opening.

Confirm the time on Crosta’s page before an early drop-off.

Both branches take card payment for storage through AirPAY.

Namba Counters

Namba has two staffed options near the stations.

The n.e.s.t counter in Namba opens from 09:00 to 21:00 and charges ¥800 per bag per day.

It takes bags up to 220 cm in total size and 30 kg, for up to 14 days, and accepts cards, IC cards, and QR payments.

Yamato Transport also stores bags at its Namba counter.

The Yamato Osaka page lists ¥600 per bag per day up to size 120 and ¥800 for larger bags.

A Yamato size is the three sides of the bag added together in centimetres.

Hotels Hold Bags for Free

Guests' suitcases with claim tags lined up in a hotel luggage room in Osaka before check-in
Hotels usually hold guests’ bags only for the arrival or departure day, not for a trip away.

Your hotel is the first place to ask, and for guests it usually costs nothing.

Many Osaka hotels hold bags on your arrival day before check-in and on your departure day after check-out.

Hotel policies show the pattern.

The Swissotel Nankai Osaka FAQ promises free storage if you arrive before your room is ready.

Check-in there starts at 15:00 and check-out is by 11:00.

That gap is exactly why the service exists.

Hotel Cordia Osaka keeps bags after check-out too.

Its FAQ answer asks you to collect them the same day and refuses valuables and fragile items.

Three limits apply almost everywhere:

  • Same day only: hotels hold bags for your arrival or departure day, not for a trip away.
  • Guests only: a hotel you are not staying at will not take your bag.
  • No valuables: keep your passport, cash, and laptop with you.

For a hotel near your first and last train, our guide to choosing where to stay compares Umeda, Namba, and the other bases.

Storage Networks When the Lockers Are Full

Kannaya Nareswari walks hands free along a quiet shopping side street in Shinsaibashi, Osaka, after leaving her suitcase

Storage networks fill the gap between lockers and counters.

They sign up shops, cafés, and small hotels with spare room, and you book a slot online before you arrive.

You drop the bag, show your booking, and collect it later.

This model fixes the three problems that catch most visitors.

Booking Ahead Instead of Hoping

A booked slot is waiting when you arrive.

At Namba on a Saturday morning, that beats walking the station looking for a free locker.

It also means you can plan your route around the drop-off point instead of the other way round.

Room for Bags No Locker Takes

A storage partner has no box to fit.

Oversized cases, pushchairs, and two suitcases at once all work.

Compare that with the one extra large locker at Kintetsu Osaka-Namba.

One Daily Price Per Bag

Networks usually charge one flat price per bag per day, whatever its size.

For a large suitcase, that often matches or beats a big locker or a counter.

Partners cluster where visitors do.

Expect the most choice around Osaka Station and Umeda, around Namba, Shinsaibashi, and Dotonbori, and near Shin-Osaka and Tennoji.

Same-Day Delivery Before the 11:30 Cutoff

Suitcases with delivery slips waiting at a parcel counter in Osaka for same-day delivery to hotels
Yamato’s city counters deliver to central Osaka hotels the same day for bags dropped by 11:30.

Same-day delivery sends your suitcase from a station or airport to your hotel while you sightsee.

It costs more than a locker but frees your whole day.

The Japanese word to know is takkyubin, meaning door-to-door parcel delivery.

Yamato Counters in the City

Yamato Transport runs the widest network.

Drop a bag at a Yamato city counter by the cutoff and it reaches a hotel in central Osaka the same day.

The hotel needs a front desk that can receive parcels.

The cutoff is 11:30 at the Namba station front, Osaka Station front, and Shin-Osaka east exit counters.

Some smaller counters have earlier cutoffs of 10:00 or 11:00.

Delivery covers Kita, Nishi, Konohana, Chuo, Naniwa, Yodogawa, and Higashiyodogawa wards.

Yamato size Same-day price in Osaka
60 ¥1,240
100 ¥1,860
140 ¥2,540
160 ¥2,860
200 ¥4,140

Measure your case before you go by adding its height, width, and depth.

Yamato’s Osaka page does not list the delivery time at the hotel.

Ask at the counter, because it decides whether you can check in with your bag waiting.

Crosta Delivery Between Station and Hotel

Both Crosta counters send bags to hotels for ¥2,000 per item.

Drop the bag by 12:00 and it arrives from 19:00.

Both counters also run the reverse trip.

Hand your bag to the hotel by 10:00 and pick it up at the station from 15:00 to 19:30.

That reverse service suits a late train.

You check out, sightsee light, and collect your case on the way to the platform.

Longer Trips With JR West

JR West launched Same-day Delivery WEST on 24 June 2026 with Sagawa Express.

According to JR West’s announcement, it carries bags from Osaka, Shin-Osaka, and Kyoto stations to hotels in Hiroshima and Fukuoka.

A bag to Hiroshima costs ¥11,000, so this is a convenience, not a saving.

It makes sense if you are moving on after Hiroshima by Shinkansen and want both hands free.

Kansai Airport Lockers and Delivery

The long, curved departure hall of Kansai International Airport Terminal 1 with travellers and luggage trolleys
Kansai Airport lockers cost ¥400, ¥600 or ¥800 a day by size, with the day changing over at midnight.

Kansai Airport has lockers, staffed counters, and delivery desks, so you never need to drag a case into the city.

For the train and bus choices, see our comparison of trains and buses from Kansai Airport.

KIX Coin Lockers

The airport’s locker page lists three sizes, charged per day.

Large lockers for suitcases cost ¥800, medium ¥600, and small ¥400.

The day changes over at midnight.

JAL ABC runs them in Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and the Aeroplaza.

Same-Day Delivery From KIX

Yamato opened a counter in the Terminal 1 north area on the fourth floor, open from 06:30 to 22:30.

Its KIX counter sheet promises delivery to Osaka and Kyoto city hotels after 18:00 the same day.

The cutoff is 12:30.

Yamato quotes the price at the counter.

For a morning landing, this is the easiest way to reach your hotel with only a daypack.

Sending Bags to KIX Before You Fly

Kansai Airport’s delivery service page asks you to book with a carrier by phone three to four days before your flight.

Yamato’s Airport TA-Q-BIN page sets the drop-off deadline at two days before departure, or three from some areas.

From a Yamato city counter in Osaka, a bag reaches Kansai Airport at 07:00 the next day.

So you can send it on your last full day and collect it at the airport before check-in.

Shinkansen Rules for Big Suitcases

A white Shinkansen train at a Shin-Osaka Station platform with a large suitcase waiting by the platform edge line
Bags over 160 cm in total size need a seat with an oversized baggage area, or you pay a ¥1,000 fee.

Big suitcases on the Shinkansen need a reserved seat.

JR Central’s oversized baggage rules apply to bags over 160 cm and up to 250 cm in total size, on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen.

Reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area.

It costs no more than a normal reserved seat.

Board without one and you pay a ¥1,000 fee.

Bags over 250 cm cannot ride at all.

Anything 160 cm or under needs no booking.

Forwarding a Case From Tokyo

Forwarding a suitcase from Tokyo with Yamato skips the rule and the stairs.

The Yamato rate table prices a cash shipment from the Kanto area to Kansai like this:

Size Tokyo area to Osaka
120 ¥2,170
140 ¥2,780
160 ¥3,160

Yamato takes parcels up to 200 cm in total size and 30 kg.

Before you send, run your hotel’s postcode through Yamato’s delivery date search.

It shows the arrival day, which tells you how many nights to pack for.

Our guide for travellers coming down from Tokyo covers the train side.

Which Luggage Option Fits Your Day?

Kannaya Nareswari walks light along the Dotonbori canal promenade in Osaka in late afternoon sun
Leaving a suitcase at your hotel and carrying a daypack makes a day trip or a long walk far easier.

The right choice depends on the bag and the clock.

Match your situation below and you will rarely pay for the wrong option.

  • A day trip from Osaka. Leave the suitcase at your hotel and travel with a daypack. If you are changing hotels that day, use a Yamato counter before 11:30. Our routes for a day in Nara and the Kyoto day trip routes assume you travel light.
  • An early arrival before check-in. Go straight to the hotel and leave your bag at the desk. Landing at Kansai Airport before 12:30, send it with Yamato and ride into town light.
  • A late flight after check-out. Leave the bag at the hotel if you pass by again. If not, send it to the airport on your last full day. Crosta Shin-Osaka, open to 23:00, covers an evening Shinkansen.
  • A Shinkansen arrival with a large case. Book the oversized baggage seat, or forward the case a day ahead. At Shin-Osaka, Crosta and SPACER sit near the main exit.

Practical Tips Before You Lock Anything

Kannaya Nareswari photographs her locker door with her phone at a bank of coin lockers in an Osaka station
Big stations have several locker banks that look alike, so a photo of the number saves a long search.

A few habits stop most luggage problems before they start.

Each one costs nothing.

  • Photograph the locker number and location. Big stations have several locker banks, and many look the same.
  • Keep your passport on you. You need it for hotel check-in, and some tax-free purchases.
  • Top up your IC card first. A locker that takes ICOCA can only charge the fee if your card holds enough.
  • Watch the time limit. App lockers such as SPACER remove bags after 96 hours and charge a ¥5,000 handling fee.
  • Pack delivery bags for the road. The tourism organisation’s hands-free rules exclude valuables, fragile items, fresh produce, and liquids.

JNTO adds that delivery carriers compensate for lost or damaged items, and the amount depends on the carrier.

Yamato’s own takkyubin terms cap its liability at ¥300,000 per parcel.
