Overview

The Santa Maria is built at twice the size of the actual ship Christopher Columbus sailed to the Americas in 1492, and that scale is the first thing you notice when you walk up to the pier at Tempozan Harbor Village.

The vessel is operated by Osaka Aqua Bus and departs from the Kaiyukan West Wharf roughly every hour between 11:00 and 16:00 daily, covering the inner waters of Osaka Port in about 45 minutes at a flat adult fare of ¥1,800.

Holders of the Osaka Amazing Pass board the Day Cruise for free, no ticket exchange required at the counter, just present your QR code directly at the boarding gate.

The route circles the port area at a gentle pace, giving clear views of the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel, the coastal industrial skyline, and on clear days the distant outline of Yumeshima, the Expo site island.

The upper open deck is the place to be, though the sea breeze is strong enough that a light jacket is useful outside the summer months.

An enclosed lower deck with seating is available if the wind is a problem.

The Twilight Cruise, running on weekends and select holidays from April through October, extends the ride to 60 minutes and costs ¥2,300 for adults, with departure times shifting between 17:15 and 19:00 depending on the season.

The ship closes for annual hull inspection each January into early February.

In 2026, the closure runs from January 13 to February 6.

Operations can also be suspended on short notice due to wind or sea conditions, so checking the official schedule at suijo-bus.osaka before turning up in rough weather is worth the two minutes it takes.

Editor's Review

4.7/5

The Santa Maria Day Cruise is exactly what it looks like: a pleasant, low-key 45-minute loop around Osaka Port on a handsome galleon replica, and not much more than that.

The upper open deck is genuinely enjoyable on a clear spring or autumn afternoon, when the sea air and harbour views make a convincing case for the ¥1,800 fare.

If you have the Osaka Amazing Pass, this is a straightforward free tick and worth doing for the novelty alone.

The limitation is that the route itself is short on drama.

The port scenery is pleasant but industrial in places, and the 45 minutes passes fast enough that first-timers sometimes feel they have barely settled before it ends.

The Twilight Cruise at ¥2,300 offers a better visual payoff for the price in late summer when the 19:00 departure catches the last of the light, but it only runs on weekends and select holidays.

Arrive at the pier 15 minutes before your intended departure, as the boat does fill on busy weekend afternoons.
