# Day Trip to Uji from Osaka: The ¥300 Ticket People Miss

> Two stations called Uji on opposite banks, and the Phoenix Hall interior needs a second ticket bought on the day.

**Day Trip to Uji from Osaka: The ¥300 Ticket Most People Miss (2026 Guide)** – Uji sits about an hour south of Osaka and works better as a half day than a full one.

The Keihan Main Line Limited Express and the Keihan Uji Line run from Osaka Yodoyabashi to Keihan Uji in about 60 minutes for ¥490.

Byodoin charges ¥700 for the garden and museum, and the inside of the Phoenix Hall costs another ¥300 on a same day timed ticket.

That second fee is the thing almost every guide leaves out, so this [**Explore Osaka**](https://explore.osaka/) guide opens with it.

A day trip to Uji from Osaka goes wrong in three predictable ways, and all three are avoidable if you know them before you tap through the gate.

You buy one ticket and assume it covers everything.

You look up “Uji Station” and end up on the wrong bank.

Or you give the town ninety minutes, which is roughly what Byodoin alone takes if you go inside the hall.

## **Two Uji Stations on Opposite River Banks**

[![The Uji Bridge over the Uji River with wooded hills behind and low buildings along both banks in spring](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Uji-Bridge-over-the-Uji-River-Day-Trip-to-Uji-from-Osaka.jpg)](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Uji-Bridge-over-the-Uji-River-Day-Trip-to-Uji-from-Osaka.jpg)

*The two stations called Uji sit on opposite sides of this river, about 500 metres apart*

Uji has two stations called Uji, run by different companies, sitting about 500 metres apart on opposite sides of the Uji River.

Keihan Uji is the terminus of the Keihan Uji Line, on the east bank, right at the foot of the Uji Bridge.

JR Uji is on the JR Nara Line, on the west bank, and its 2000 rebuild was designed as a nod to the Phoenix Hall down the road.

The distance matters less than the bank.

From Keihan Uji, The Tale of Genji Museum is six minutes on foot and Ujigami Shrine is ten.

From JR Uji those same walks take sixteen and fifteen minutes, because you have to cross the bridge first.

Byodoin is the exception.

It sits 10 to 15 minutes from either station, so neither one wins on the main event.

So pick your station by what else you want.

Arriving at Keihan Uji and leaving from JR Uji works nicely, because you walk the town in one direction instead of doubling back.

Just remember the return fares differ, since they are different companies.

## **The ¥700 Ticket Skips the Phoenix Hall**

[![Byodo-in Temple in Uji, Japan, is reflected in the calm waters of its surrounding pond.](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Phoenix-Hall-at-Byodoin-temple-in-Uji-Day-Trip-to-Uji-from-Osaka.jpg)](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Phoenix-Hall-at-Byodoin-temple-in-Uji-Day-Trip-to-Uji-from-Osaka.jpg)

*Byodo-in temple in Uji*

Byodoin admission is ¥700 for adults, and it covers the garden and the Hoshokan museum only, checked September 2026.

Walking inside the Phoenix Hall is a separate ¥300, and the two tickets are sold in different places at different times.

The temple opens at 08:45 and closes at 17:30, with last entry at 17:15, and it has no closing days at all.

That last point is worth holding onto, because The Tale of Genji Museum across the river shuts every Monday.

Plan on 45 to 90 minutes for the garden and museum together.

Add the hall tour and a wait, and Byodoin becomes a two hour stop rather than a quick photograph.

### **How the ¥300 Interior Ticket Works**

The interior ticket is sold on the day only, at a desk inside the garden, and never in advance.

Tours run from 09:30 to 16:10 in slots of 50 people every 20 minutes, and the desk starts issuing timed tickets at 09:10.

Buy it the moment you walk in, before you look at anything.

On a busy afternoon the next few slots fill and you are handed one an hour out, which is how people end up either waiting around or leaving without seeing the inside at all.

The tour itself runs about 15 minutes, with a staff explanation in Japanese.

Ask at the desk for the printed translation, which comes in English, Chinese and Korean.

### **What ¥700 Actually Buys**

The ¥700 covers the garden, the Aji pond that the Phoenix Hall is reflected in, and the Hoshokan museum.

Standing at the pond is where the photograph on the back of the ¥10 coin comes from, and the hall you are looking at was finished in 1053.

The museum holds the original roof phoenixes, the temple bell and the cloud riding bodhisattvas, and it is genuinely good.

It also opens later and shuts earlier than the garden, from 09:00 to 17:00 with last entry at 16:45, so do it before you run out of afternoon.

[![Phoenix Hall at Byodoin with twin wing corridors reflected in the still Aji pond under spring light](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Byodoin-Phoenix-Hall-Aji-Pond-Day-Trip-to-Uji-from-Osaka.jpg)](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Byodoin-Phoenix-Hall-Aji-Pond-Day-Trip-to-Uji-from-Osaka.jpg)

*The ¥700 ticket gets you this view, and ¥300 more gets you inside*

## **Is Uji Worth It Against Kyoto and Nara?**

[![A crowded street of traditional Japanese shops contrasts with a serene path leading to a shrine among tall trees.](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/split-composition-Uji-and-Kyoto.jpg)](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/split-composition-Uji-and-Kyoto.jpg)

Uji is worth half a day, and that is the honest framing.

Byodoin runs 45 to 90 minutes, the two shrines on the east bank take under an hour between them, and everything after that is tea and a river.

Against the alternatives the trade is clear.

A [day trip to Kyoto](https://explore.osaka/day-trip-to-kyoto-from-osaka/) gives you more than you can fit in a day and forces you to choose districts. [Nara](https://explore.osaka/day-trip-to-nara-from-osaka/)

gives you the deer, Todaiji and a park you can wander for hours.

Uji gives you one world class building, two quiet shrines and the best matcha in the country, and then it is done.

That makes Uji the right pick in two situations.

It suits a second or third Japan trip, when you have already done the headline temples and want somewhere small.

It also suits a half day paired with Fushimi Inari, which sits on the same JR Nara Line between Kyoto and Uji.

Skip it if this is your first week in Japan and you have not seen Kyoto yet.

Skip it if you dislike green tea, because a good part of the appeal is edible.

And skip the Monday trip if the Genji Museum was your reason for coming.

Take the Keihan Main Line Limited Express from Osaka Yodoyabashi and change at Chushojima onto the Keihan Uji Line.

The whole run takes about 60 minutes and costs ¥490 one way, checked September 2026, and it puts you on the east bank beside the Uji Bridge.

| Route | Operator and line | From | Time | One way | Pass |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Keihan Main Line Limited Express then Keihan Uji Line | Keihan, change at Chushojima | Osaka Yodoyabashi | 60 min | ¥490 | None |
| JR Special Rapid Service then JR Miyakoji Rapid Service | JR Kyoto Line then JR Nara Line, change at Kyoto | Osaka Station | 55 min | ¥580 to Kyoto, then ¥240 | Japan Rail Pass valid |
| JR Miyakoji Rapid Service | JR Nara Line | Kyoto Station | 17 min | ¥240 | Japan Rail Pass valid |

The JR route saves five minutes and costs several hundred yen more, so it only makes sense if a rail pass is paying for it.

Trains on the Keihan Uji Line are all stations locals, running about five an hour through the middle of the day, and they connect straight off the limited express at Chushojima.

Yodoyabashi is on the Osaka Metro Midosuji Line, which is the practical way in if you are staying around Namba or Umeda.

Note that Umeda and Osaka Station are the same hub under two names: JR calls it Osaka Station, while the Osaka Metro, Hankyu and Hanshin stops there are Umeda.

If you are already spending the day in Kyoto, forget Osaka departures entirely.

The JR Nara Line Miyakoji Rapid Service runs Kyoto Station to JR Uji in 17 minutes for ¥240, which makes Uji the easiest half day in Kansai from a Kyoto base.

## **Why You Split the JR Ticket at Kyoto**

[![Green travel jacket with coins, blank cards, and woven straw bag arranged in a flat lay](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Green-Travel-Outfit-Coins-Woven-Bag-Cards.jpg)](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Green-Travel-Outfit-Coins-Woven-Bag-Cards.jpg)

JR West charges a discounted fare of ¥580 between Osaka Station and Kyoto to compete with Hankyu and Keihan, and that discount only applies when both ends of your ticket sit inside that pair of stations.

Travel through to Uji on a single ticket and the discount drops away, so the fare is calculated the ordinary way over the whole distance.

The fix costs nothing.

Buy Osaka to Kyoto and Kyoto to Uji as two tickets, or tap out and back in at Kyoto, and you keep the ¥580 plus ¥240.

You are changing trains at Kyoto anyway.

This is the kind of rule that makes a rail pass look better than it is.

The nationwide Japan Rail Pass does cover the JR route to Uji, because both the JR Kyoto Line and the JR Nara Line belong to JR West.

For a trip that stays inside Kansai it still loses money, since it only earns its price when you cross the country by shinkansen.

Two other products get confused with it.

The [Osaka Amazing Pass](https://explore.osaka/osaka-amazing-pass/) costs ¥3,500 for one day and ¥5,000 for two, and it covers Osaka Metro, the New Tram, Osaka City Bus and around 40 attraction entries inside Osaka city, which means it does nothing for you in Uji.

The KANSAI RAILWAY PASS LITE excludes JR entirely but does cover Keihan, so it is the one product here that might actually fit, and it is worth checking its operator list against the Keihan Uji Line before you buy.

An [**ICOCA**](https://explore.osaka/osaka-amazing-pass-vs-icoca-card/) simply pays the fare, whichever company you use.

## **One Day on Both River Banks From 11:00 During Uji Day Trip**

[![Kannaya Nareswari smiles while leaning on a wooden railing on a bridge overlooking a river and traditional Japanese buildings.](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Kannaya-Nareswari-Uji-Bridge-over-the-wide-green-Uji-River-in-Uji.jpg)](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Kannaya-Nareswari-Uji-Bridge-over-the-wide-green-Uji-River-in-Uji.jpg)

A late morning arrival is fine, and 11:00 at Keihan Uji is the shape this day wants.

The station sits at the foot of the Uji Bridge, and the east bank is the quieter half, so start there while the Byodoin crowd is still building on the other side.

Walk up to Uji Shrine first, about ten minutes along the slope above the water.

It is free, it takes fifteen minutes, and the main hall shows the nagare-zukuri roof line, pitched longer over the entrance than the back.

Uji Shrine and Ujigami Shrine were a single institution until the Meiji period separated them.

A hundred metres further uphill is Ujigami Shrine, and it is the reason to walk this bank at all.

The main hall is the oldest surviving shrine building in Japan, put up in the eleventh century as the guardian shrine of Byodoin, and it joined the UNESCO listing for the monuments of ancient Kyoto in 1994.

Entry is free and twenty minutes covers it.

[![Wooden main hall of Ujigami Shrine in Uji behind a low fence with cedar trees around it](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Ujigami-Shrine-Oldest-Hall-Day-Trip-to-Uji-from-Osaka.jpg)](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Ujigami-Shrine-Oldest-Hall-Day-Trip-to-Uji-from-Osaka.jpg)

*The oldest surviving shrine building in Japan, and free to walk into*

Cross the Uji Bridge around lunchtime and eat on the west bank, where the tea shops are.

Then give Byodoin the early afternoon, going straight to the interior desk before you photograph anything.

From Byodoin it is about ten minutes west to JR Uji Station, which is the sensible exit if you are carrying on to Kyoto rather than back to Osaka.

If Keihan brought you in and Keihan is taking you home, walk back over the bridge before you settle into a second cup of tea.

Aim to be moving by 16:00 either way.

## **Matcha Is the Only Food Reason to Come to do Day Trip to Uji from Osaka**

[![Kannaya Nareswari sitting on a traditional Japanese street enjoying a matcha soft serve ice cream](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Uji-Street-Travel-Kannaya-Nareswari-Matcha-Ice-Cream-Kyoto.jpg)](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Uji-Street-Travel-Kannaya-Nareswari-Matcha-Ice-Cream-Kyoto.jpg)

Uji does not beat Osaka on food, and pretending otherwise wastes your appetite.

Osaka gives you takoyaki, kushikatsu and okonomiyaki at a few hundred yen a plate.

Uji gives you tea, and tea is genuinely the best in Japan here, which is a narrower but real claim.

Byodoin Omotesando, the approach street on the west bank, is where the tea houses cluster.

The things worth ordering are matcha soft serve, chasoba (cold soba noodles made with green tea), and a proper bowl of usucha served with a sweet.

Several of the older shops on this street have been selling tea for centuries rather than decades.

The process is the part people trip over.

The best known matcha cafes run a queue list at the door, and you write your name and number down, then come back when your slot comes up.

Put your name on the list before you go to Byodoin, not after, and the wait disappears into your temple visit.

Tea to take home is the other reason to budget here.

A tin of decent ceremonial grade matcha is not a souvenir price, so decide before you walk in whether you are buying the good one or the everyday one.

---

## **Budgeting ¥4,000 to ¥8,000 Per Person**

[![Woman counting coins while sitting on a wooden bench near a canal.](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Kannaya-Nareswari-Budgetting-Kinosaki-Onsen-Day-Trip-From-Osaka.jpg)](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Kannaya-Nareswari-Budgetting-Kinosaki-Onsen-Day-Trip-From-Osaka.jpg)

A day in Uji costs ¥4,000 to ¥8,000 per person, and where you land depends mostly on transport and tea rather than on entries.

Entries are cheap here compared with the other day trips from Osaka.

The low end is Keihan both ways at ¥980 return, Byodoin at ¥700, a simple lunch and one matcha.

The high end adds the ¥300 hall interior, the ¥600 Genji Museum, a sit down lunch, a bowl of ceremonial grade tea and a tin to take back.

Uji is the cheapest destination in this category by a wide margin.

A [day trip to Himeji](https://explore.osaka/day-trip-to-himeji-from-osaka/) costs more in fares alone than a whole day here, and the onsen trips run several times this.

For how that compares with a day spent inside the city, the [full Osaka cost breakdown](https://explore.osaka/osaka-travel-budget/) puts the same money against food and transport in Namba.

## **April Wisteria and November Maples**

[![Kannaya Nareswari admiring purple wisteria flowers at a traditional Japanese garden](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Kannaya-Nareswari-Japanese-Wisteria-Garden-Travel-Photo.jpg)](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Kannaya-Nareswari-Japanese-Wisteria-Garden-Travel-Photo.jpg)

Late April and November are the two weeks to aim for.

Byodoin keeps a wisteria trellis beside the path to the Phoenix Hall, and it flowers in late April, which is also when the new tea season starts and the town smells of it.

November brings maples along the river and up the slope behind Ujigami Shrine.

The east bank is where the colour is, which is the one time of year that quiet half of town gets busy.

Summer is the weak season.

The river valley holds humidity, the walk between the shrines is exposed, and hot matcha is a hard sell in August.

Winter is fine but plain.

For the wider seasonal picture, the [month by month guide to Osaka](https://explore.osaka/best-time-to-visit-osaka/) covers what else is running when.

Crowds follow Kyoto rather than Uji.

When Kyoto is full in the first week of April and the last week of November, Uji takes the overflow, and the Byodoin interior slots go fastest on exactly those days.

[![Bowl of whisked matcha and a small sweet on a wooden counter at a tea house in Uji](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Uji-Matcha-Tea-House-Omotesando-Day-Trip-to-Uji-from-Osaka.jpg)](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Uji-Matcha-Tea-House-Omotesando-Day-Trip-to-Uji-from-Osaka.jpg)

## **Go in the Morning and Leave by Four**

[![Kannaya Nareswari strolls along a paved path beside a river with a bridge in the background.](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Kannaya-Nareswari-riverside-path-beside-the-Uji-River-in-Uji-Day-Trip-to-Uji-from-Osaka.jpg)](https://explore.osaka/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Kannaya-Nareswari-riverside-path-beside-the-Uji-River-in-Uji-Day-Trip-to-Uji-from-Osaka.jpg)

Go if you want one great building, two quiet shrines and the best tea in Japan, and if you are content to be back in Osaka by late afternoon.

Uji rewards a slow half day and punishes anyone trying to stretch it into a full one.

Skip it on a first trip with Kyoto still unseen.

Skip it on a Monday if the Genji Museum mattered to you.

And skip the 14:00 arrival, because the Phoenix Hall interior slots thin out through the afternoon and the last one leaves at 16:10.

If you want a half day out of Osaka that is genuinely cheaper and shorter, nothing else in the category comes close on price.

If you want a full day, take one of the [other Osaka day trips in range](https://explore.osaka/day-trips/) instead and save Uji for a morning when you are staying in Kyoto.

Either way, buy the ¥300 ticket first and photograph the hall second.

- **FAQ Heading**:
  - **FAQ Title**: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
  - **Heading Tag**: h2
- **FAQ Field**:
  | Question | Heading Tag | Answer |
  | --- | --- | --- |
  | How long does it take to get to Uji from Osaka? | h3 | <p>About 60 minutes and ¥490 on Keihan, taking the Keihan Main Line Limited Express from Osaka Yodoyabashi and changing at Chushojima onto the Keihan Uji Line, checked September 2026.</p> <p>The JR route is five minutes quicker and costs more: the JR Kyoto Line Special Rapid Service from Osaka Station to Kyoto at ¥580, then the JR Nara Line Miyakoji Rapid Service for ¥240. Take JR only if you hold a rail pass that covers it.</p> |
  | Do you need a separate ticket to go inside the Phoenix Hall? | h3 | <p>The ¥700 Byodoin admission covers the garden and the Hoshokan museum, and nothing else. Going inside the Phoenix Hall costs a further ¥300, sold only on the day at a desk inside the garden, in timed slots of 50 people every 20 minutes from 09:30 to 16:10, checked September 2026.</p> <p>Buy that ticket as soon as you walk in. Later slots fill first on busy days, and the tour itself takes about 15 minutes.</p> |
  | Which Uji station should you use? | h3 | <p>Uji has two stations of the same name, run by different companies, about 500 metres apart on opposite banks of the Uji River. Keihan Uji sits on the east bank beside the Uji Bridge, six minutes from The Tale of Genji Museum and ten from Ujigami Shrine.</p> <p>JR Uji sits on the west bank, closer to the tea shops on the Byodoin approach. Byodoin is a 10 to 15 minute walk from either one.</p> |
  | Is Uji worth a day trip from Osaka? | h3 | <p>Uji is worth half a day rather than a full one, and that is the honest way to plan it. Byodoin takes 45 to 90 minutes, the two shrines on the east bank take under an hour between them, and the rest of the day is tea.</p> <p>If you want a full day of sightseeing, Kyoto or Nara gives you more. Uji suits a slow morning and an early return.</p> |
  | Does the Japan Rail Pass cover Uji? | h3 | <p>The nationwide Japan Rail Pass covers the JR route to Uji, since the JR Kyoto Line and the JR Nara Line are both JR West. It does not cover the cheaper Keihan route, which is a private railway.</p> <p>For a Kansai only trip the national pass loses money anyway. The Osaka Amazing Pass is no help at all here, because it covers nothing outside Osaka city.</p> |

- Kannaya Nareswari is a travel writer and food culture specialist at Explore Osaka, covering Osaka's neighborhoods, restaurant scene, and hidden cafés for first-time and returning visitors. She splits her time between Bali, Tokyo, and Osaka — and has strong opinions about where to eat in all three. Her guides combine on-the-ground research with an obsessive attention to the kind of detail that actually matters: opening hours that are correct, price ranges that are honest, and the takoyaki stalls worth the queue.
